The 2028 Countdown: A Climate Tech Marketing Playbook for Los Angeles Startups

A climate tech marketing agency in Los Angeles helps startups use the run-up to the 2028 Olympics to win public and corporate buyers. The playbook is simple: frame your technology around visible 2028 outcomes like cleaner transport, cooler streets, and resilient power, film every pilot so each deployment becomes proof, and build content that city, utility, and corporate buyers can share internally.

This guide covers LA's climate startup ecosystem, why 2028 changes the buying cycle, and how to turn the next two years of pilots into a pipeline.

‍

LA's Climate Startup Engine Turns 10

Los Angeles has a decade-old engine for climate startups. LACI, the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator, celebrated 10 years at its La Kretz Innovation Campus in the Arts District in September 2026.

According to LACI, its portfolio now includes:

  • 537 companies
  • $1.5 billion in combined funding raised
  • $477 million in revenue generated

LACI has also become a national player. It recently announced 10 startups joining pilots at BATWorks, New York City's climate hub at the Brooklyn Army Terminal, deploying technologies such as EV charging, e-bikes, and urban cooling. We cover that hub in our NYC climate tech marketing guide.

LA's climate founders have strong support. What they need now is a reason for buyers to move fast, and 2028 provides one.

‍

The 2028 Deadline Changes the Buying Cycle

Most cities have no fixed date for climate progress. Los Angeles does. When the world arrives for the 2028 Games, the region's air, streets, and transit will be on display.

At its second Road to 2028 Summit, held at Intuit Dome, LACI announced nearly $600 million in new commitments to climate action across Greater LA. They include:

  • LA County: $280 million for clean energy and EV charging
  • LADWP: $186 million for clean energy access, lower costs, and grid reliability
  • LAUSD: electrifying 25% of its bus operations by 2028, with 329 electric buses
  • TreePeople: $50 million to plant and maintain 28,000 trees to improve air quality and reduce urban heat

The commitments build on LACI's first summit in December 2025, which inspired $125 million. LACI also estimates that about $11 billion has gone into clean transportation and energy infrastructure in LA County since 2020.

LACI President and CEO Matt Petersen put the urgency plainly: "the investments we make over the next 18-24 months will determine the progress we can achieve."

That deadline changes how buyers behave. Cities, utilities, transit agencies, and corporate partners are actively looking for technology they can deploy, measure, and show off before 2028. Slow, open-ended evaluations become faster decisions with a date attached.

What Does a Climate Tech Marketing Agency in Los Angeles Do?

A climate tech marketing agency in Los Angeles turns climate technology, pilots, and demo days into content that public agencies, utilities, corporate partners, and investors trust. That usually means pilot footage, short proof clips, pitch films, and explainer animation.

For LA founders, the agency also needs to understand public-sector buyers, who answer to elected officials, residents, and procurement rules rather than just a CFO. Ask any agency for examples of public-sector or infrastructure work, and how they handle agency approvals.

‍

Frame Your Technology Around Visible 2028 Outcomes

Public buyers do not buy technology. They buy outcomes they can point to in a press release, a council meeting, or a visitor's first impression of the city. Match your story to one of the outcomes LA is already funding.

Cleaner transport

EV charging, electric fleets, and clean mobility are at the center of the 2028 push, from county chargers to school buses. If your technology helps, show the vehicles running, the chargers in use, and the emissions or cost data behind them. Archer Aviation's commitment to add charging at seven Southern California airports shows how wide that net is.

Cooler streets

Urban heat is a visible problem for residents and visitors alike. Shade, cool surfaces, and tree programs are easy to film and easy to understand. Show the before and after, with a temperature reading on screen.

Programs like TreePeople's 28,000 trees create natural partners for startups working on heat.

Resilient power

LADWP's commitment focuses on grid reliability and clean energy access. Storage, microgrid, and efficiency startups should lead with uptime and cost, the two outcomes utilities measure first. LADWP's program includes vehicle-to-grid and storage-to-grid efforts, a direct opening for storage startups.

Film Every Pilot So It Becomes Proof

A pilot that is not filmed is a pilot nobody else sees, no matter how well it performed. Before 2028, every deployment is a chance to build proof that wins the next contract.

  1. Agree on filming rights at the start. Public agencies often have communications teams and approval steps, so settle this before the pilot begins.
  2. Capture the baseline. Film the site before installation so you can show the change.
  3. Film the deployment. Short clips of installation, operation, and the people using it.
  4. Record the results. Put real data on screen, such as kilowatt-hours, temperature, or vehicle miles.
  5. Capture the community. A resident or operator explaining what changed is often the most persuasive clip of all.
  6. Share the footage with your partner. Agencies and utilities often want content for their own reports and social channels, which spreads your work further.

One well-documented pilot can win the next three. Agencies and corporate partners want to see that your technology worked somewhere similar.

‍

Build Content Buyers Can Share Internally

Public-sector and corporate buyers rarely decide alone. A sustainability officer has to convince a director, who has to brief a council member or an executive team. Your content should make that job easy.

  • A two-minute pitch film that explains the problem, the technology, and the pilot results
  • Short proof clips of 30 to 60 seconds that a buyer can forward in an email or post on LinkedIn
  • An explainer animation for technology that cannot be filmed, shown without exposing proprietary details
  • A one-page summary linking to the pitch film for in-person meetings and procurement files

We took this approach for C-Biotech, which works with bio-based construction materials, creating videos that explained its features and processes without revealing proprietary information.

How LA Compares to Other Climate Hubs

Each climate city has its own challenge. Boston founders work to turn pilots into contracts, as we cover in our Boston climate tech marketing guide. San Francisco founders compete with AI for attention, which we explore in our San Francisco climate tech guide.

LA's advantage is the deadline. Each city's lessons apply here too, but only LA has a fixed date on the calendar.

For the wider LA hard tech scene, see our guide to choosing a deep tech marketing agency in Los Angeles. LA medtech founders face a similar need to show technology working, as we cover in our medical device marketing guide for Los Angeles.

‍

Turn Every Pilot Into Proof Before 2028

Every pilot you run before 2028 is proof, if someone captures it. The window closes when the Games begin.

We turn your pilot deployments and demo days into short-form proof content, and make pitch films that help you win the city, utility, and corporate partners shaping LA's Olympic-year climate push.

See our work in our case studies, then book a call to see what we would build from your footage.
